2. November's $$ Saving Tips - Your furnace and ink in carpet

To reduce the chance of a furnace failure during a winter cold snap, consider hiring a heating contractor to give your furnace a "tune-up" this fall. Replace the filter and keep extra filters on hand to replace at least once or twice during the winter. If you have a humidifier, clean it thoroughly to avoid health problems from airborne bacteria. A clean house is a happy house!

Here is a quick tip you might want to try if you have ink in your carpet. Put dry baking soda in carpet and rub it in the ink stain. Then put a little more on top, then pour vinegar on it and keep blotting it with clean paper towel until the ink is gone. You may have to repeat the steps over a few times but the end results is no more ink in the carpet. If you have several pesky stains, contact Home-Work. We can recommend fabulous carpet cleaning companies.

3. Which jobs to do yourself and which to hire out

Jobs to Do Yourself
- Projects with inexpensive materials and tools like minor painting, sealing a driveway
- Projects that involve "grunt" work (more sweat than brains) like removing paint, wallpaper, tiles, or old carpeting
- Labor-intensive jobs like yard maintenance and minor landscaping
- Projects that are too small for a contractor like patching wall holes, repairing a broken screen
- Jobs that pay back in energy savings like weatherstripping around doors and caulking windows
- Projects that improve your lifestyle with conveniences like closet shelving, easy-to-clean tile, a ceiling fan

Jobs to Hire Out
- Projects that involve electrical, plumbing, or foundation work must pass local building codes, so hire a licensed professional who knows what's required.
- Projects that require expensive specialized tools like a floor sander, scaffolding
- Projects with expensive building materials like custom-painted tile or high-end carpeting or wall covering
- For projects that change the exterior of the house or rework the interior floor plan, hire a professional designer.

4. Winter snow facts!

Here are two things to know about snow that can help you save money this winter.
1. Huge piles of snow may be great for kids building forts, but it poses a concern for lawns: snow mold. By spreading snow over a larger area, you reduce the chances of snow mold becoming a problem. When removing ice treated with an ice-melter from driveways and walks, spread it over a large area. If you concentrate this salty material just along the edge of the drive or walk, these areas may show signs of salt damage next spring.
2.. Although snow feels cold on your hands and feet, it can actually be a good foundation insulator and sealer. There is a lot of energy loss through the exposed foundation surface of most houses. There is also a lot of air leakage where the house walls rest on the top of the foundation. Unless your basement or crawl space has a water leakage problem, as soon as above-freezing temperatures are forecast, shovel the snow up against the foundation. The snow will seal any cold air leaks. It will also create a thermal buffer from the cold nighttime winds.

6. The Monthly Funny :-)

Some friends and I were discussing, if a lawyer can be disbarred, doesn't it follow that a banker can be disinterested and a blackjack dealer can be discarded?  Continuing with that theme:
Can't an electrician be discharged, a professional mover dislocated, a residential developer distracted and steel worker distempered?
