2. May's $$ Saving Tip - Stains on your countertops

If you have stubborn stains on your plastic laminate countertops,
here's a quick tip that may surprise you.  Most stains on laminate will respond very well to freshly squeezed lemon juice. Just leave the juice on the stain for about half an hour, then sprinkle on some baking soda. As the baking soda and lemon juice interact, start scrubbing the stain with a clean cloth. After a few minutes, simply wipe the mixture away, and you should be enjoying stain-free countertops once again.

3. Making your home more secure

To make you house more secure, you do not have to drive up your electric bills with outdoor lights on all night. Here are some simple, low-energy usage security tips:

1) Install motion-sensing outdoor security lights and adjust them to stay on only one minute after motion is no longer detected.

2) Post a "Security Alarm" or "Beware of Dog" sign in your yard.

3) Make sure all of your window latches and locks are in the fully locked position. If a latch is not fully locked, wiggling it from outdoors can sometimes loosen it and allow the window to be opened.

4) Plant thorny varieties of shrubs under windows in dark areas.

4. Prepaid Contractor's Licenses

Last month, we did a segment on "Paying for your Renovation Work".  This outlined when and how Alberta Municipal Affairs suggests you pay for your renovation work.  I wanted to take this time to let you know about companies that are able to take money upfront for your renovation projects.  These companies are licensed by Alberta Housing & Consumer Affairs as "Prepaid Contractors".  These companies have qualified for this licensing and also carry a bond which protects the customer should the work not be completed properly.  These companies, in having this license, are legally allowed to collect a down payment and interim payments for projects.

6. The Monthly Funny :-) "Two Gas Men"

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban Calgary neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter. Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger co-worker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one. As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from the last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong. Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd better run too!"
