A mower in good repair lasts longer -- and cuts better, too
An annual tuneup is not only important to the health and
appearance of your grass, it increases the longevity of your
mower. Do It Yourself Tune up:
Step 1
Your lawnmower should be unplugged before you work on it and the
plug is a good place to start your inspection. Make sure the
prongs are straight and secure. Then check the length of your cord
for nicks or cuts. (Never use an extension cord longer than 100
feet/30 metres the motor runs harder and could burn out.)
Step 2
Next, clear out the air-vent slots for the motor. Remove the
housing over the motor and brush away any grass or debris; for a
more thorough job, use a vacuum cleaner. Without air to cool it,
the motor may overheat and burn out. Before you put the housing
back on, place three or four drops of 3-in-1 oil in the small
opening on the top of the motor.
Step 3
Electric lawnmowers have two carbon blocks, called brushes, that
act as electrical conductors for the motor. The length of the
carbon brushes should be longer than their width. If theyre
more short than wide, its time to replace them.
Step 4
Time to turn the machine on its side to check the blade. If its
bent or cracked, replace it; otherwise, you need to sharpen it. If
the blade is dull, it hacks at the grass instead of slicing it,
and it makes the motor run harder. First remove the blade theres
usually a nut or bolt that holds it in place. The point is to file
down any nicks so theres a straight line across the cutting
edge. If you need to file more than one-quarter of the blades
width to do this, its time to replace the blade. Give the blade
a spin with your hand to make sure nothing obstructs its rotation,
and also listen for grinding or squeaking noises this could
indicate a problem with the bearings or obstruction in the motor.
Step 5
The wheels on most lawnmowers are adjustable to control the height
of the grass. For the first cut of the season, set at the highest
level so you avoid stones and other debris left over from winter
that might not be visible. Be sure all four wheels are at the same
height, or youll get a ragged cut.
Step 6
Make sure all nuts, bolts and screws on the lawnmower are fastened
tightly. Check all fasteners periodically over the season the
vibration of a lawnmower during use may cause some to come loose.

Apartments and condominiums often have balconies, of varying
sizes. You can transform your balcony or deck to create an
attractive, lush planting to view from inside your home or
outside. Remember to keep in mind your general color scheme and
design when choosing your containers. In addition to maintaining
your plants, your containers also require regular maintenance.
Thoroughly clean your containers with soap and water. If you have
terra-cotta pots, soak them in water before planting. Because they
are made of clay, they absorb a great deal of moisture. When
planting in containers it is important to have a clean pot with
good drainage and fresh potting mixture. Do not use the soil from
your garden, as it will be too heavy to support the plant and will
not provide the drainage that container plants need. Because soil
in containers dries out very quickly, it needs additional
ingredients that help to maintain moisture. Remember to always
choose a container that is at least two inches larger than the
root ball of the plant. Fertilizing your potted plant will ensure
that it has the essential nutrients it needs to remain healthy. Do
not soak your new plant with water initially. Allow it to develop
a good, strong root system before beginning daily watering.
Container plants only have a limited space to spread their roots.
Therefore repotting should be done yearly to encourage healthy
growth. Finally, when planting in a potted container, always
remember the same principles of design as are used for a fresh cut
flower arrangement: you want to incorporate vertical, horizontal
and cascading features. Due to the limited space, you can go on a
color frenzy by combining a host of colors.
